Fredericka Martin Collection

The Fredericka Martin Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, research files, and manuscripts focusing on Martin's interests in the Pribilof Islands and the welfare of the islands' Aleut residents; the evacuation of the Aleuts from the Pribilof Islands to Southeast Alaska during World War II; the work, life, and genealogy of linguist and translator Richard H. Geoghegan; Spanish exploration of the Northwest Coast and the coast of Alaska; and Russian America. The collection includes Martin's personal journal and photograph albums of time spent in the Pribilofs in the early 1940s, and Martin's translations of Spanish documents pertaining to northern exploration in the 1770s-1790s.

Fredericka (Freddie) Imogene Martin (1905-1992) was a writer, historian, and nurse who served as a chief nurse and medical administrator during the Spanish Civil War. Martin was born in Cooperstown, New York on June 2, 1905. Her father died in an accident before her birth and when she was five her mother remarried.
